The business of Tuftco Corporation was founded in 1960 as Southern Machine Company for the purpose of manufacturing and distributing tufting machines to the carpet industry. Tuftco's founders were at the forefront of introducing the broadloom tufting machine to the world. In fact, it was during the 60's that Tuftco began marketing its equipment on an international basis, placing machinery outside the United States in Europe, Asia, and South America. The company expanded its product line in the late 60's with the addition of finishing equipment, as well as expansion into yarn delivery systems and other components necessary to produce a complete tufted carpet mill. During the 70's and 80's, Tuftco expanded its product line further coinciding with the explosive growth of computerization. During that period of time, the company chartered Tuftco Technologies, Inc. and Tuftcosoft, Inc. to take advantage of utilizing computer technology in conjunction with basic tufting technology. In that same period, the company's finishing equipment division made acquisitions of manufacturers of carpet handling equipment including conveyor systems and roll-up machines. This further expanded Tuftco's product offering to supply the carpet manufacturer with a complete turnkey tufted carpet operation anywhere in the world. In 1985 the ownership of the company was transferred to the family that currently comprises the Board of Directors of Tuftco Corporation. Today Tuftco has four large manufacturing facilities in the Southeastern United States, as well as offices in California and Belgium. The company's mission is to provide ideas and machinery for customers to develop soft floorcovering products that create new and fresh looks for flooring areas in both residential and commercial settings.
